Buying a skateboard can be expensive, especially if you want it to be customized. There is a much less expensive alternative though that you can take pride in. It is easier than you might think to be able to build your own skateboard. This way you don’t have to take what is offered out there. You can have the best of all the options for the type of skating you want to be a part of.
The first think you need to think about when you build your own skateboard is what size you want the deck to be. If you are a beginner to skateboarding or a larger size then you should go with a wider size of deck. If you want to be able to do tons of tricks with ease then a smaller deck size can help you to be successful. The width of your feet should also be taken into consideration. The wider they are, the wider deck you will need to be able to skateboard comfortably.
You can choose to paint the deck a solid color or you can add graphics to it. Stencils will allow you to easily put flames, a skull, or any other design on it you want. Make sure you use high quality paint that will last. You also want to put a clear coat over the top of it to protect it. You don’t want your graphics to get messed up due to normal wear and tear that occurs when you use your skateboard.
It may amaze you to discover all of the different types of wheels you can choose from when you build your own skateboard. You will find that the colors of them are plentiful as well. The hardness of them is another aspect you want to consider before you purchase them. This is referred to as that durometer and the most common hardness used is the 99a. You should be looking for wheels with a diameter from 52mm to 55 mm. Of course you may want to use something more unique in order to accomplish the skateboard you have in mind.
The larger size of wheels you choose, the faster your skateboard is going to move. If you are looking for speed then that is something to keep in mind. If your main use of the skateboard though will be to do tricks, then smaller sized wheels are going to be more beneficial to you. Keep the terrain that you will be skating on in mind though too while selecting wheels. You are likely going to want something that is very versatile.
To hold the wheels in place, you will need bearings as well. You need to buy good quality bearings as this is one part of your skateboard that will wear out rapidly if you don’t. There are different grades of bearings so take the time to find the ones that are right for you. They are going to be either 1,3,5,7,or 9. Generally you will want to use either a 3 or a 5 when you build your own skateboard.
The trucks will need to be placed underneath your deck as this is the axle system for any skateboard. You need to make sure that the width of them is a good match with the deck you have selected. Pay close attention to the overall height of them as well. The lower it is the easier you will be able to perform tricks and flips so they are a good match with small wheels. When you go with larger sized wheels you will also need to use a higher trunk.
It is very simple to build your own skateboard, even for a beginner. Make sure you use only quality parts though so it will be durable. You want to put all the pieces together correctly as well to prevent accidents from occurring. There are step by step instructions and well as videos found online to help you. With some basic skills and basic tools you will be able to make a great skateboard for a very low price.

Buying a Skateboard - Tips and Hints
17. October 2009 by ZachPlay.

It’s easy to be a little awed by all the variety of designs that are out there when you start shopping for a skateboard. The graphics can be incredible and so can the skateboards that were created by some of your favorite professional skateboarders. Don’t let the appearance of the skateboard fool you though, there is more to a skateboard than how it looks. You want a skateboard that will stand the test of time, not just one that will look good for a few months then fall apart.
The way you skate should influence the kind of skateboard you buy - think about your style and what you like to do with the skateboard. Do you need a skateboard that is longer or one that is wider instead? Your physical size is also something to consider. People who are lighter can use a smaller deck while those who are heavier need to think about getting a more solid deck on their skateboard.
Do some research on the internet before you start shopping - see what others have to say about the different types of skateboards. Also, visit local skate shops and talk to some of the employees to see what they would recommend. Generally, if you are new to skating, you want to look for a board with a wider deck than more experienced skaters might have. If you are just starting out with skateboarding, buy a less expensive board until you get a feel for skating and see if you really like the sport and want to keep it up. If you decide skating isn’t for you, then you won’t have wasted too much money.
Don’t decide on a skateboard until you have spent a lot of time thinking about the different aspects of the board and how they work for you. You need to consider if the deck size works for you and if the wheels are going to be the right size and the right type for you. You should always try out any skateboard you are thinking about buying just to see if it will do what you are going to want it to do. If a store says that don’t allow this, don’t buy a skateboard from them!
Online research can also be useful for finding out what others think about specific boards you are considering. Read reviews and comments about the boards you are interested in to get an idea of how happy people are with them and how long they last. Read about how long the skateboards last, especially with daily use. You want one that will last you at least 6 months, if not a year. Skateboards are not cheap, so you don’t want to have to buy a new one every few months.
While skateboards can be bought online for less sometimes, you need to get a feel for the board before you buy it. This is why it is good to go to stores in your area and shop around, trying different brands and types of boards. Once you decide on one that you think will work for you, then you can consider purchasing it online. You don’t want to buy a skateboard online that you never tried only to find it isn’t at all what you wanted - what a waste of money. Remember to find out how much shipping will cost when buying a skateboard online because it varies from store to store.
Don’t forget to find out what kind of return policy any store, especially online vendors, has before you buy a skateboard. If you have problems with the skateboard or it just isn’t working for you, you should be able to return it and get all your money back as long as you do so within a reasonable time. When buying a skateboard online, make sure the company will be very flexible when it comes to returns.
There are so many different types and styles of skateboards that it can be overwhelming - not every board will work for everyone. Figure out how much you are willing to spend and check out several different skateboards in that price range before you make a final decision. You need to to try as many as possible so you can figure out what type will make you happy and make skating as fun as possible. Also, you want a skateboard that will keep you safe!
Skateboards don’t have to be expensive, you can get reasonably priced ones in many styles and type. If you are looking to spend a little more, you might think about having one built specifically for you.

Skateboarding Grip Tape - Flaunt Your Creativity
5. October 2009 by ZachPlay.
Author: Jerry Parker
Skateboarding grip tape is a coarse sand paper like sheet, which is applied over the deck of the skateboard. This adhesive tape helps you to control your skateboard by increasing the friction between your shoes and the skateboard. It is generally a black colored tape, though you can find grip tapes of a variety of other colors. Depending upon your personal choice and your creativity, you can work wonders even with this black tape and create your own personalized skateboard.
You shall find skateboarding grip tape in the form of rolled sheets. They are made with a variety of materials and therefore the quality of these tapes varies with the type and grade of the material used. It also differs from company to company as well as the manufacturing process adopted. Make sure that the material used for your skateboarding grip tape is of the best quality in order to avoid accidents.
If you are planning to use the grip tape to decorate your old skateboard, ensure that you remove the trucks as well as the previous grip tape completely from the deck first. If you allow any portions of the old tape to remain then the new tape fixed will peel from the older one. Moreover, it will also become quite difficult to fix the skateboarding grip tape properly with the other hardware on the deck in place. While laying down the grip tape on the deck of the skateboard, you should be cautious to avoid any air from being trapped in between the tape and the deck or else the tape shall rip off the board while skateboarding. To avoid this you should apply pressure and push the air towards the rim of the deck while applying the grip tape starting from the front end of the deck and moving towards the back. Another thing that you should bear in mind while laying down the grip tape is to lay it in such a fashion, which easily identifies the nose and tail of the skateboard. You may alternatively choose to spray paint the top of your skateboard’s deck.
To add a personal touch to your skateboard’s deck you can draw some freehand figures on the grip tape or can even cut out figures into your skateboarding grip tape. If you are not all that creative, do not lose heart, for you can make your skateboard deck look unique by simply placing the skateboarding grip tape to create different kind of patterns. However, if this is also not your cup of tea then pick up the fancy skateboarding grip tape manufactured by leading brands with pre-cut shapes and symbols on them. Some of the grip tapes available in the market are transparent ones as well. You have innumerable options to choose from when buying a grip tape for your skateboard, as there are several brands offering grip tapes at a wide range of prices. So, go ahead and a pick the right one to help you to flaunt your creativity on your skateboard.

Cheap Skateboards For The Beginner
2. October 2009 by ZachPlay.
When looking for a cheap skateboard as a beginner, the best thing to do is buy a skateboard that is already assembled. This is also known as a complete skateboard. For beginners, before you start skateboarding, it’s helpful to know a skateboard has 4 main parts. The first part is the deck, which is the part you will be standing on, next the trucks and wheels which go underneath the deck lastly the bearings which go inside the wheels.
If you are a beginner, I recommend starting out on a traditional skateboard. It is the most commonly used type of skateboard and is normally shorter than 33 inches, which makes it easier to control for tricks and ramps. This will make also make it a lot safer when starting out.
It’s important to know the difference between a poorly-made, inexpensive skateboard and a quality cheap skateboard when purchasing a skateboard. A poorly-made cheap skateboard is usually inexpensive, made with poor quality material, will break often and need parts replaced more than you’d like. Safety is also a concern with a poorly-made, cheap skateboard.
You can find quality cheap skate boards that are inexpensive and made from good quality material. They will perform better and last longer than some of the other skateboards on the market today.
I recommend reading some reviews before purchasing your first skateboard to make sure you’re getting a quality cheap skateboard and not a inexpensive, poorly-made skateboard!
