Newbie Skateboarding Blues - What Causes Them

No one is a great skateboarder the very first day. You’ll find some skaters who catch on to the basics in no time at all. Other skaters require more time to get used to balance, feel, and the particular motions of skating. If you’re beginning, you’ll pick-up some tips and little tricks to help you learn faster and better. Here are a few hints and tips for you to keep in mind as you choose your first skateboard and work at taking that very first ride home.  Try not to skateboard through your dog door!

You’ll need to be wearing the right foot gear. Skateboarding uses specific muscles in your feet, and you need to be able to move your feet in certain ways to control your board properly. Of course you are free to skate in whatever shoes you want. But if you want to tricks or anything like that, you’ll really need the appropriate shoes. A skateboarding athletic shoe is flat inside of it. There is little to no arch support, which is done on purpose. You’ll have more board control because your feet will be able to control better. They’re not expensive or hard to find. Don’t buy your first board from a department store, the best way to go is from a skaters shop. At a skate shop the employees will be well versed in skateboarding and will be able to help you find the board you need to begin with. Most new skateboarders begin with a simple ABEC board, but until you try out a few different boards and get a feel for the different sizes, weights and styles, you won’t truly know which board is best suited to you. The people in a skate shop will be more qualified to help you than your average clerk in a department store or sporting store. It really will make a difference if you listen to what they have to say about this subject. They’ll have all the inside scoop for you!  You also do not want to crash through our double glazed windows.

Goofy and Regular are two basic stances you’ll want to learn. The Regular stance is done with the left foot in front, right foot in the rear. For the Goofy - just do the opposite! There are four basic push offs you can do. Goofy (use your left foot), and Mongo Goofy: push with your front (left) foot, Regular (use your right foot to push), Mongo Regular: push with your front (right) foot It will take time to figure out which works best for you. Just about any person can learn how to ride a skateboard. If you can be patient and learn slowly, then you really can do anything you desire on a board. You’ll get there if you can be patient!
